In early June of 2011, Howard Norman, Frank Woods, and Dick
Eisenach of the Rotary 100 International Outreach Committee traveled
to Hermosillo Mexico for the dedication ceremonies of nearly 1000 home
water tanks which our committee helped purchase through the Rotary
matching grant program. This ceremony was a huge event and involved
numerous state and local dignitaries, press and Rotary officials. The
tanks were distributed to poor people living on the outskirts of town
who otherwise had no clean water source .
While we were there as the guests of our partners at the Hermosillo
Pitic Rotary club, our hosts took us to visit the Escuela Prepararia
San Juan Bautista De La Salle. This is a new school built by the
government for children living in poverty in the near-by
neighborhoods. One room in the school had been designated for a
computer lab but they had a major problem. No computers. Would we
be able to help with the computers?
Upon returning to Phoenix, we contacted Jim Soudriette of the Rotary
100 Computers for the Community Committee. After hearing our story,
Jim was able to provide 30 reconditioned pentium 4 computers
complete with XP, keyboards, mouse, Open Office, 15 inch flat screen
monitors, and sound cards.
Our partners in the Hermosillo Pitic club were elated! After numerous
exchanges involving applications, permits, consent forms and other
documents, the computers were ready to go. Finally, on November 11
(Veterans Day) Rafael Burrola Cázares and fellow Rotarian "Daniel"
traveled to Phoenix, picked up all the computers and accessories, and
drove them back to Hermosillo. According to Raphael, the computers
will be installed immediately and made available to the students
beginning with the second (2nd) grade. Thanks to everyone who helped
with this great project.
