March 9, 2012: Climate Change Skeptic

Do you believe global warming and climate change are not happening?  Guest speaker Warren Meyer doesn't deny they are happening, and neither do other science-based skeptics.  Meyer says alarmists like to tell the public that skeptics are taking these positions, in order to discredit them.  He believes the climate is always changing without any help from man — a good example is the drying up of North Africa over the last centuries.  The period from 1600-1800 was among the coldest in the last 5000 years, so it is natural we would see warming in recovery from this.  Is there any scientific evidence to support that global warming and climate change is not really that harmful?  Meyers has spoken extensively on this and will share his thoughts.  He doesn't deny the greenhouse gas theory, that man’s CO2 can cause some incremental warming.  He believes the greenhouse gas theory has to be real, or the world would be much colder right now.  But what he denies is the catastrophe, that temperature a hundred years hence will be five or ten degrees Celsius higher due to man’s CO2.   This is one meeting not to miss.  Skeptical of the skeptic?  Then come and challenge Warren Meyer on this hot topic of global warming.

Chair of the Day: Joe Wolfe

March 23, 2012: Arizona's Cowboy Poet

Guest Speaker Baxter Black has been described by the New York Times as '…probably the nation's most successful living poet..."  This former large animal veterinarian can be followed nationwide through his column, through National Public Radio, through public appearances, on television and also through his books, CD's, videos and commercial radio.  Baxter lives in Benson, Arizona, between the Gila River and the Gila monster, the Mexican border and the Border Patrol and between the horse and the cow---where the action is.  He still doesn't own a television or a cell phone, and his idea of a modern convenience is Velcro chaps.  Everything about Baxter is pure cowboy, including his cartoonish mustache, his personality and his poetry.  He makes a living shining a spotlight on the flaws and foibles of everyday cowboy life.  He demonstrates that it is the truth in his humor that makes it funny.   Baxter starting writing poems in his mid-thirties and is still writing today.  He advises writers to write about what they know, and what Baxter knows is how to be a cowboy.  He’s Arizona's own.  Come meet Baxter Black from Benson.

Chair of the Day: Terry Gilberg

March 30, 2012: Arizona Technology Council

It's been said that Arizona Technology Council is the first organization that every technology company in Arizona needs to join.  Its mission is to connect, represent and support Arizona's expanding technology industry.  To promote economic growth and professional development in Arizona's technology sector, the Council provides members networking opportunities, business support and access to educational forums. The Council was established in 2002 after the Arizona High Tech Industry Cluster (HTIC) merged with the Arizona Software & Industry Association (AZSoft.net).  It has 600 member-companies throughout the state, which include technology companies, service providers, government agencies, academic institutions and non-profit organizations.  Guest speaker Steve Zylstra is its President and CEO.  He has a background in Nano Materials and tech-based economic development.  He is a former president of the Pittsburgh Biomedical Development Corporation, and prior was the director of business development for Simula Technology of Phoenix.  In that role he served in the research, development, testing and manufacturing of high-tech transportation seating and safety systems, advanced polymers, composite technologies, and ballistic armor systems.  Where is tech going in the future?  Come and hear Steve Zylstra explain.

April 13, 2012: Verify the Vote, Arizona!

When speaker Catherine Engelbrecht (from Texas) and her friends sat down and started talking politics several years ago, they soon agreed that talking wasn’t enough. They wanted to do more. So when the 2008 election came around, about 50 of her friends volunteered to work at Houston’s polling places. They discovered widespread voter fraud, including judges voting for people who asked for help, and no one even checking IDs.  They soon shared their experiences and created "True the Vote,” a citizen-based grassroots organization that began collecting publicly available voting data to prove that what they saw in their day at the polls was, indeed, happening -- and that it was happening everywhere.  This election cycle (2012) they are empowering poll workers nationwide to verify that the vote is honest and accurate.  They offer poll watcher training, identifying voter fraud issues, and are working for ballot integrity in every state.  Catherine will visit Phoenix Rotary 100 from Texas to explain the problem and offer a look at the nationwide training for pollsters to curb fraud abuse.  The Arizona group, "Verify the Vote, AZ" is partnering with Engelbrecht for ballot integrity.

Chair of the Day: Jennifer Wright

April 20, 2012: Maricopa County's New Court Tower, Downtown Phoenix

This special meeting will be an off-site one.  Phoenix Rotary 100 will not meet at the Phoenix Country Club, but rather at the new Maricopa County court tower.  The tower opened publically in February 2012, just in time for Arizona's 100th birthday.  The new court tower is a 340 million dollar building with 16 stories that provides a state-of the art facility able to handle a growing number of cases--tens of thousands!  The building will be recognized as a top center of justice in Arizona.  It is arguably the most modern, secure and accessible court building in America and will be a welcoming environment for the public and those who use our courts.  County Supervisors, judicial officers and staff, law enforcement personnel, communications personnel, plus construction managers and architects have all come together to help with the ribbon-cutting of this new court structure.  Phoenix Rotary 100 members will get a private tour of the site on this date, which includes lunch and a program by presiding Judge Davis.  Details will follow about the address, where to park, and where lunch and the program will be before we take our tour!  Stay tuned.
