The 2010-2011 Phoenix Rotary 100 Award Winners Minimize
Distinguished Rotarian Award
John J. Low

John Low joined our club in 1958 and served as our President in 1983/1984 - he ended each meeting with “stay sober and stay out of jail”. Since then, John has provided limited, insightful and welcome council to incoming club Presidents, including “don’t be intimidated by us Past Presidents”, “do it your own way” and “focus on leading great Friday meetings”. John continues to be active in several committees and he is a relentless and constructive critic of our programs. We can always count on John for mischievous, sardonic and ever-tasteful humor at the microphone. Our club is well-served by the insights and mirth of John Low and we proudly honor John as our 2010/2011 Distinguished Rotarian.

David Wastchak “Spirit of Rotary” Award
Terry Gilberg

Terry Gilberg typifies the spirit of David Wastchak as she impacted our club immediately upon joining in 2006. She exudes energy, excitement and flair. Terry brought exciting speakers to the student participants in our high school speech contest. Continuing her community outreach, she served as a Quarterly Chair and subsequently as General Chair of our Program Committee, bringing a variety of outstanding programs to our club meetings. Terry offers constructive insights as a member of our Board of Directors. Dave Wastchak would be very proud to be identified with the contributions to our club of Terry Gilberg.

Tim Creedon “Quiet Confidence” Award
Barry Shemer

Barry Shemer, like Tim Creedon, is so focused on getting the job done and thanking others, he never thinks about recognition for himself. A master at organizing projects behind the scenes, Barry makes it easy for others to slip into their respective roles and function as a team. Since 1988 Barry has led our Rubber Band, which has generated $1,000,000 for the Salvation Army. He has shaped club policy on our Board of Directors. In 2010 & 2011 he led our club and other civic organizations developing an urban garden for refugees – city permits, civil engineering, construction contracts, lien waivers, fund-raising, etc. Barry organized the Rubber Band multiple times this past year to bring music and energy to our club meetings. Our club is well-served by the quiet, persistent leadership of Barry Shemer.
